Alvarez Homers Twice on Alonso’s Historic Night
The star of the show Tuesday night was Pete Alonso, but Francisco Alvarez was fantastic in a supporting role.
He hit a towering, 413-foot, two-run home run to right field to give the Mets a 3-1 lead in the second inning over the Braves. He smacked a one-hop RBI double off the wall in right center to give the Mets a 9-5 lead in the fifth. And he put the cherry on top by raising the apple again with a 382-foot solo blast to left in the seventh. His sixth homer of the season made it 12-5.
Since returning from a one-month stay at Triple-A Syracuse on July 21, Alvarez is hitting .304/.418/.630 with three homers in 46 at-bats. His slash line was .236/.319/.333 when he was sent down and after his 3-for-4 performance Tuesday it is up to .254/.347/.414. The time in Central New York appears to have been well spent.

It was a historic game for Alonso, a breakout game for Alvarez, and a sorely needed outburst from the offense to snap a seven-game losing streak. The Mets (64-55) won 13-5, tallied 16 hits and scored every run with two outs.
A graphic titled “No More Pyro” appeared on the Citi Field scoreboard after New York’s sixth and final home run: “Due to too many Mets home runs, we have unfortunately run out of fireworks for the night. We apologize for the inconvenience.”
“We just kept scoring,” Alonso said. “Kept scoring and scoring. We needed that as a ball club. It’s a really good night for the team.” It was the most runs the Mets had scored since June 8.
“That’s what our offense is capable of when everybody is clicking,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “It was a big-time performance from our offense and picking Clay (Holmes) up in a sense.” Holmes gave up five runs in 3 2/3 innings.
Alvarez, 23, will be the answer to a trivia question as the other guy to hit two home runs on the night Alonso hit two to set and extend the Mets’ home run record. Another trivia bit: Alvarez is third all-time for home runs by a Mets rookie. First and second are Alonso and Darryl Strawberry.
