Full list of 38 Poundland stores confirmed to close this August

Another wave of Poundland store closures is on its way as part of the retailer’s sale for £1 in a bargain-bin rescue deal.

We’ve already lost 10 branches of Poundland this month, with locations including Tunbridge Wells and Long Eaton shutting their doors permanently tomorrow – Sunday, August 10.

But there will be another 38 shops closing for good throughout the rest of August, including this weekend.

Until its restructure Poundland operated about 800 shops across the UK, but the business is now reducing that number to anywhere between 650 and 700.

This process is expected to take place over time, with 68 branches closing down with more shutting as and when their leases expire and aren’t renewed.

It is understood that the remaining branches will shut on a rolling basis until mid-October.

Poundland’s retail director, Darren MacDonald, said: ‘It is, of course, sincerely regrettable that our recovery plans include any store closures, but sadly that’s necessary if we’re to achieve our goal of securing the future of thousands of jobs and hundreds of stores.

‘While our anticipated network of around 650-700 stores remains a sizeable one, we entirely understand how disappointing it will be for customers when one nearby, closes.

‘Nevertheless, we look forward to continuing to welcome them to a nearby Poundland.

‘It goes without saying that we will work closely with colleagues through a formal consultation process in stores scheduled to close, exploring any suitable alternative roles. That work is underway.’

Poundland closures follow ‘£1 sale’ of company

Investment firm Gordon Brothers bought the struggling discount shop in June, with Poundland going into a ‘restructuring’ process.

The company told Metro in June that the end goal would be reducing the number of Poundland stores from about 800 to 650.

Alongside the confirmed closure of 68 stores, Gordon Brother also wants to ditch frozen food products and cut the number of chilled food items sold.

They also plan to shut their frozen and digital distribution centre in Darton, South Yorkshire, later this year, as well as their national distribution centre in Bilston, West Midlands, in early 2026.

Poundland plans to stop selling products on its website, instead choosing to provide more womenswear and seasonal ranges in-store.

These plans are dependent on the green light from the High Court in August.

Consumer experts have told Metro how, between the coronavirus pandemic and a gruelling cost-of-living crisis, the British high street isn’t what it was a few years ago.

The Centre for Retail Research predicts that more than 17,000 shops will close this year – up from 13,500 in 2024.
