Denmark Donates $4.66 Million to Support Afghanistan Relief Efforts, UN Says
Denmark has contributed $4.66 million to Afghanistan’s humanitarian fund, the UN said, as aid agencies warn of worsening funding shortages.
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Tuesday that Denmark has contributed $4.66 million to the Afghanistan Humanitarian Fund. The agency described the support as vital for communities affected by emergencies and ongoing instability.
OCHA warned that Afghanistan remains one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises, with millions facing food insecurity, limited healthcare access and economic hardship.
According to earlier UN estimates, up to 22 million people may require humanitarian assistance in 2026 if current conditions persist.
For 2026 alone, humanitarian agencies need $1.72 billion to support essential needs, including food aid, medical services, shelter and protection assistance for approximately 17 million people.
However, due to declining global donations and reduced engagement, OCHA said it was forced to scale back its humanitarian appeal for next year.
Humanitarian groups say shrinking funding is already impacting life-saving operations, including food distribution programmes and support services for women and children, groups most affected by ongoing restrictions and economic collapse.
Aid officials warn that without renewed and sustained international support, Afghanistan’s humanitarian crisis could deepen further, leaving vulnerable families without essential assistance.
