Goodbye June Cast: Where Have You Seen The Christmas Film's Stars Before?
If you’re looking for something festive and new to stream this Christmas season, Netflix might have a late offering to add to your watchlist.
On Christmas Eve, the streaming giant added the seasonal tear-jerker Goodbye June, about a British family getting ready to spend one last Christmas with its matriarch, who is terminally ill.
The new film boasts an impressive, predominantly-British cast, full of faces that you’re bound to recognise.
If you’re wondering where you’ve seen one or two of them before, here’s a quick guide to the Goodbye June cast…
Kate Winslet
Come on, she’s Kate Winslet!
Alright, just in case you’re not familiar with one of the most famous British actors working right now, Kate Winslet rose to global prominence in the mid-1990s for her work opposite Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic, and went on to star in projects like Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind, The Holiday, Revolutionary Road and The Reader, for which she won her first Oscar.
More recently, she’s appeared in the Avatar movies, Ammonite, Lee and the TV series Mare Of Easttown and I Am Ruth, with Goodbye June marking her first time working behind the camera.
Around this time of year, it’s also customary to remember that she had a short-lived singing career as a tie-in with an oft-overlooked adaptation of A Christmas Carol that she was involved in, but she’d probably rather we didn’t mention that…
Toni Collette
Toni Collette is, quite simply, one of the greatest actors in the world.
After her breakout role as the lead in Muriel’s Wedding, she went on to appear in the life-affirming Little Miss Sunshine, the British dramedy About A Boy, the stomach-wrenching horror Hereditary and the murder mystery Knives Out.
On the small screen, she won an Emmy for her work in the dark comedy The United States Of Tara, and was nominated for another for Unbelievable, more recently appearing in shows like The Staircase, Wayward and Wanderlust.
The Australian actor should probably have about 12 Oscar nominations to her name at this point, but for some reason, has only been recognised once, for her work in the horror-thriller The Sixth Sense.
Johnny Flynn
One of Johnny Flynn’s earliest roles was as the lead in the British comedy Lovesick (previously known as Scrotal Recall which… ick), and was later cast as a young Albert Einstein in Genius and William Dobbin in Vanity Fair.
His biggest movie role was as David Bowie in 2020’s Stardust, but you might have also seen him in Emma, One Life and The Dig.
Johnny is also a musician, releasing six albums as the lead singer of Johnny Flynn & The Sussex Wit.
Andrea Riseborough
In the last few years, Andrea Riseborough has really cemented her spot as a bankable film actor, with some of her biggest movie roles including Bird-Man, Matilda The Musical, Battle Of The Sexes, Mandy and To Leslie, which famously won her an Oscar nomination after a very public Hollywood campaign.
She has also been Bafta nominated for her portrayal of Margaret Thatcher in The Long Walk To Finchley, appeared opposite Julie Walters and Robbie Coltrane in National Treasure and took the lead in the popular Black Mirror episode Crocodile.
Dame Helen Mirren
With four Oscar nominations, 11 Bafta nods and a whopping five Emmy wins to her name, it’s fair to say that Dame Helen Mirren is a recognisable face on both the big and small screen.
On TV, she played DCI Jane Tennison across seven seasons of ITV’s Prime Suspect, while her film work has included the likes of The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover, The Madness Of King George, Calendar Girls, the Fast & Furious movies and the 2025 adaptation of The Thursday Murder Club.
She’s also notably portrayed Queen Elizabeth II on multiple occasions, perhaps most famously in The Queen, for which she was named Best Actress at the Academy Awards.
Timothy Spall
As well as the TV sitcom Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and his many collaborations with director Mike Leigh, Timothy Spall has a wide range of credits to his name.
His many eclectic roles have included performances in Nicholas Nickleby, Sweeney Todd, Spencer and Mr Turner.
To Harry Potter fans, of course, he’s best remembered for his work as Peter Pettigrew, a Death Eater who once took the form of Ron Weasley’s pet rat Scabbers.
Stephen Merchant
To many, Stephen Merchant will be best remembered as Ricky Gervais’ right-hand man, co-creating shows like The Office, Extras and An Idiot Abroad in addition to his own acting and comedy career.
Stephen’s on-screen work has included Hot Fuzz, Jojo Rabbit, The Big Bang Theory, Hello Ladies (which he co-created) and Fighting With My Family (the second of two films he’s directed).
Outside of comedy, in 2022, he starred opposite Sheridan Smith in the hard-hitting true crime drama Four Lives, playing the serial killer and rapist Stephen Port.
Kate Winslet has previously revealed she gave Stephen a role in Goodbye June as a thank you for casting her in an infamous cameo in Extras 20 years ago.
Fisayo Akinad
Fisayo Akinade’s breakthrough moment came in the 2010s when Russell T Davies cast him as a lead in Cucumber and its companion show Banana.
Since then, he’s appeared in the films The Girl With All The Gifts and The Personal History Of David Copperfield, as well as TV series including Dangerous Liaisons, Ordinary Lies and a memorable episode of Atlanta.
If you’ve seen Heartstopper, you’ll also recognise Fisayo for portraying the sensitive art teacher, Mr Ajayi, who is a confidant for Charlie throughout the series.
Raza Jaffrey
Raza Jaffrey has racked up a number of impressive TV credits over the years, including Spooks, Homeland, Elementary and Smash (as well as the ill-fated Sex And The City movie sequel, playing the butler Gaurau).
More recently, he’s starred in Netflix’s Lost In Space, the ITV drama Maternal and the Prime Video sequel Malice, marking a rare dramatic role for comedian Jack Whitehall.
Jeremy Swift
Ted Lasso viewers will know Jeremy Swift for his Emmy-nominated performance as Leslie Higgins, while his biggest credits also include All Creatures Great & Small and Downton Abbey.
You might also recognise him from Foyle’s War, The Durrells, Wanderlust or Strike.
