ICC rankings: Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav drop out of ICC top 10 ahead of T20 World Cup 2026
New Delhi: Star India cricketer Shubman Gill, was recently dropped from the 15-member squad picked for the T20 World Cup 2026 just a few days ago. Gill was the vice-captain of the T20 side and a strong contender for the World Cup, but his fortunes changed and he was dropped from the team, and now the latest ICC rankings have delivered a severe blow to both the former T20 vice-captain and the current captain.
In the latest ICC rankings, Shubman Gill and T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav have faced a major setback. Suryakumar Yadav, who has been struggling with form ahead of the World Cup, has dropped out of the top 10 batsmen. After several low scores in recent matches, he has slipped out of the top 10 for the first time in a long while.
Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav have both slipped out of the top ten
India’s Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill and T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav have both slipped out of the top ten in the ICC batting rankings. Following four low scores in the India vs South Africa T20 series, Suryakumar has fallen to 13th place. SKY entered the top ten in July 2022, had maintained his position consistently until now. This drop comes after a rough 18 months. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill who missed the India vs South Africa Test series, has also exited the top ten. After stellar performances against England and the West Indies, Gill had become India’s highest-ranked batsman, but missing two Tests has seen him slip to 11th. Currently, Yashasvi Jaiswal is the only Indian batsman remaining in the top ten.
Gill was dropped as team opted for wicketkeeper-batter
ODI captain Shubman Gill’s average in T20s in 2025 has been only 26.3, while his averages in IPL, ODIs, and Tests are 50, 49, and 70.2 respectively. The team selectors believe they needed a wicketkeeper-opening batter, which is why Shubman Gill’s place in the team was not justified, leading to his exclusion.
Skipper Suryakumar’s statistics are even worse. Suryakumar Yadav has scored only 218 runs in 21 innings in 2025 at an average of 13.62 and strike rate of 123.16. Based on these statistics, Suryakumar didn’t deserve a place in the team, but perhaps changing the captain would have sent the wrong signal in many ways, so he was retained. However, he couldn’t maintain his position in the ICC rankings.
