Eastern Santa Monica Mountains Recreational area and San Fernando Valley are under a weather alert for strong thunderstorms by the National Weather Service on Thursday at 9:04 a.m. The alert is in effect until 9:30 a.m.

The storms may bring wind gusts of up to 55 mph and pea-sized hail (0.25 inches).

“At 9:03 a.m., Doppler radar tracked a strong thunderstorm over Topanga State Park, or near Woodland Hills, moving northeast at 20 mph,” the NWS Los Angeles/Oxnard CA said. “Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation is possible.”

Locations impacted by the alert include Woodland Hills, Encino, Canoga Park, Pacific Palisades, Calabasas, Topanga Canyon Road through the Santa Monica Mountains, Reseda, Mandeville Canyon, Tarzana and Winnetka.

According to the NWS, “If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. This storm may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service.”
