Urgent Winter Storm Warning Map Shows States Bracing For 10 Inches of Snow
For the vast majority of the United States, it was not a white Christmas as unseasonably warm temperatures kept winter weather at bay. However, some heavy snow is coming for parts of the country a day after Christmas.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued what it called an "urgent" winter storm warning about a storm that is expected to bring some heavy snow to parts of four states in the northeastern United States, including the New York City area.
As the storm approaches, a map shows exactly which states should be preparing to receive up to 10 inches of snow.
Winter Storm Warnings
On the morning of Friday, Dec. 26, the NWS issued a series of "urgent" winter storm warnings for parts of the northeastern United States, warning of snow that could reach up to 10 inches in some areas.
The winter storm warnings covered portions of Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York, and extended from Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. until Saturday morning, about 4 p.m. on Saturday.
"Moderate to heavy snow will develop early this evening and will continue overnight, gradually decreasing in intensity after midnight. Snowfall rates of one to two inches an
hour will be possible at times through midnight. The snow will taper off Saturday morning to scattered snow showers and flurries," the NWS wrote in its winter storm warning.
The NWS added that this could make travel very difficult.
"Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses will quickly become slick and hazardous. Travel could become difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the evening commute," the service added.
Map Shows States at Risk
While the warning was issued for several parts of those three states – Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, and New York – there are some maps that offer more specifics about who should be bracing for the heaviest snow.
The winter storm warnings covered portions of eastern Pennsylvania, southern Connecticut, northeast New Jersey, southeast New York, including Manhattan. A map, shared on X by Weather Sphere, shows which of those areas will be hit the hardest by the winter storm.
Official Final Call for #snow and #ice today and tomorrow. The 3rd iteration lol.

Currents obs and morning models support an uptrend in totals across much of SNE and portions of NY. Wouldn't be surprised to see someone pick up 12".

The map shows that parts of Connecticut and New York will receive the most snow, with 8-12 inches predicted.
Boston is expected to receive 1-3 inches of snow. Hartford, Connecticut, is expected to receive 5-8 inches, while Bridgeport is expected to receive 7-10 inches. New York City is expected to receive 4-7 inches, but the northern parts of Long Island, New York, are expected to receive 8-12 inches.
Needless to say, if you are in those regions of the country, it's best to be careful when traveling and stay indoors whenever possible.
