No major characters die in Stranger Things season 5, volume 2. While there are a few close calls, everyone survives, and Max even wakes up. However, there are hints about who may not make it to the series finale…
What’s going on with Steve Harrington?
Steve is doing just fine. He and Dustin reconcile and talk through Eddie’s death and they renew their “You die, I die” pact—which could be foreshadowing for the finale.
How are the Wheelers doing?
The Wheelers all survive this volume, and even Holly wakes up from her trance — though her safety is short-lived as she’s pulled back into Vecna’s world by the end.
Nancy and Jonathan had a close call with death, but both survived.
What is Kali’s planning?
Kali has a plan to destroy Vecna and the Upside Down completely, but it would require both her death and Eleven’s, making their sacrifices seem inevitable.
What co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer have to say
Show creators Matt and Ross Duffer spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about the show’s minimal death count this season.
“There’s not going to be a Red Wedding situation,” said Matt Duffer. “We’re not trying to shock or upset anyone. I hope by the time people get to the end of the finale that it just feels like there’s something inevitable about what happens,” he added, which does sound ominous regarding Kali/Eleven.
Steve’s death in the finale currently seems unlikely, though Matt didn’t exactly offer reassurance, saying: “But as for Steve’s fate. I don’t know. I can’t say. It would be the next logical step. He keeps getting beaten up more and more. The only way we could take it further is death.”
