David Spade Reflects on Eddie Murphy Feud & the Joke That Started It All
David Spade is looking back on the joke he made 30 years ago that sparked longtime tension with Eddie Murphy.

For context, in 1995, David made the joke during a “Hollywood Minute” sketch where he said, “Look children, it’s a falling star, make a wish,” as a photo overlay of Eddie showed on-screen. Eddie later criticized the joke as “racist.”
David says they have since reconciled and recently met up again at this year’s SNL50 special.
“We talked a little bit and everything’s fine, and then he admitted on the show — not admitted, they just asked him about it — and he said, ‘Yeah, we’re all good.’ So we’re all good,” the Tommy Boy actor said.
Before that, David said they had “bumps in the road,” and it was surreal to go from being a “super fan” to feeling like the Beverly Hills Cop star “hated” him overnight.
“I made fun of him and it didn’t go well, and he called me and we had it out,” David said on the podcast. “Actually, he had it out. I didn’t fight back really, because I did feel a little guilty about it, and he did make some sense. I just didn’t like that because he was a hero.”
Today, they’re back on good terms.
“Eddie, he just totally let it go,” David said.
Earlier this year, David recalled a scary moment where fans followed him home.
