National Weather Service Warns 'Postpone All Travel' as 'Powerful' Winter Storm Approaches
After a year that has already been filled with severe winter weather, another major winter storm is approaching parts of the United States, and the National Weather Service (NWS) is already issuing some major warnings about the dangers this latest storm could bring.
On Sunday, the NWS issued a winter storm warning for parts of the country and even a blizzard warning for parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin as a "powerful" storm is set to bring more than 20 inches of snow and over 60 miles per hour winds to some parts of the country.
As this storm approaches, the NWS is now urging travelers to take special care in their journeys and has warned some people to simply "postpone all travel."
'Dangerous' Winter Storm
On Sunday, the NWS issued a winter storm warning and a blizzard warning for parts of the Midwest and Great Lakes region, warning of a "powerful" winter storm that was expected to bring heavy snow, strong winds, and dangerously low temperatures on Sunday into Monday.
“A rapidly-intensifying storm will move from the Great Lakes into southern Canada today through Monday. Heavy snow, blizzard conditions, and icing are expected from the Upper Midwest through the Great Lakes and Northeast,” the NWS warned in an advisory early Sunday morning.
The NWS warned of “blizzard conditions” that would result in “dangerous travel conditions” for parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin, and warned of “over a foot of lake-enhanced snow” that could hit some parts of Michigan, though some meteorologists project as much as three feet of snow.
In addition to the strong winds, the NWS warned of "sub-zero wind chills" with some wind chills reaching as low as -30°F in parts of Minnesota and North Dakota.
'Postpone All Travel'
As the storm approached and intensified, the NWS warned everyone in the area to stay indoors and avoid travel if at all possible. In some areas, the NWS warned against traveling at all.
The NWS issued a blizzard warning for parts of Wisconsin and Minnesota, warning of "dangerous" and "potentially life-threatening" travel conditions.
As the storm continued to intensify on Sunday afternoon, the NWS issued a follow-up advisory, warning travelers in those conditions to "postpone all travel."
"TRAVEL NOT ADVISED ACROSS SOUTH CENTRAL AND SOUTHWEST MINNESOTA," the NWS wrote in a post on X.

"Travel conditions are deteriorating rapidly as strong winds and falling snow are leading to whiteouts. Postpone all travel until conditions improve," the NWS added.
While the intense "do not travel" warning was directed to those parts of Minnesota and Wisconsin facing the blizzard warning, the NWS urges anyone in the path of this storm to reconsider travel and to expect “considerable travel problems.”
If travel is absolutely necessary, the NWS urges travelers to be prepared with some emergency items like a cell phone charger, a flashlight, a first aid kit, jumper cables, road flares, tire chains or snow tires, water and snacks, a full tank of gas, a bag of sand or cat litter, a shovel, an ice scraper, a tow rope, water and snacks, and warm clothing and blankets.
“You never know when you will encounter winter weather or an emergency road closure,” the NWS warns.
