Sarah Drew Is Embracing a 'Fun Shift' That Came With Her Kids Entering Their Teens
For many parents, watching their kids become teens is nerve-wracking. For Sarah Drew, though, it has brought unexpected joys.
“I think my favourite thing about this particular stage of life, teen and tween, is that my kids have gone from being a lot of work to being really good company,” the Mistletoe Murders actress told us as part of SheKnows’ Parents Tell All series.
“That shift sort of has happened over the last couple of years, and it was a really fun shift,” adds Drew, who shares 13-year-old son Micah and 11-year-old daughter Hannah with husband Peter Lanfer.
“I remember exactly when it happened,” she says. “We were on a trip, I was shooting a movie in Greece and my kids came to visit and we were keeping them up until like 10, 11 o’clock at night, they were sleeping in, we were exploring the town together and it felt like for the first time we were this really fun foursome of pals that all really enjoy each other’s company.”
Even though teen tantrums are still coming in just as hot as toddler ones, Drew knows which she’d prefer.
“One really great thing about the tween and teenage years is that now I can name it and say, ‘Hey, guess what? You know what? I think you’re in your immovable space right now where nothing positive will happen in our relationship or this conversation moving forward. So I’m just gonna walk away and then when you feel like you could be a little more malleable, we can come back to this conversation.'”
“And I do that now, and they can, my son especially can be like, he’ll go away, and he’ll be in his feelings about it, but he’ll come back and be like, ‘Sorry about that,'” she says. “But when they’re in their like lizard brain toddler, you just have to ride the storm. The storm just happens, and you just have to live through it.”
