Millie Bobby Brown & Chris Pratt’s $320M Netflix Movie Dubbed as 1 of 2025's Worst
On paper, Netflix'sThe Electric State had the potential to be a hit for the popular streaming service. It features two top-tier stars in Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown and popular actor Chris Pratt. It was also directed by the Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame and upcoming Avengers: Doomsday). To top it off, the movie was based on a critically acclaimed novel written by Simon Stalenhag. Following reports that The Electric State had an eye-opening $320 million production budget, it checked in as one of 2025's most expensive projects. Now, the movie has landed squarely on the list of the 10 worst movies of 2025, according to one popular review site.
Where 'The Electric State' Landed on the List of 2025's Worst Movies
To wrap up 2025, popular site Metacritic ranked all movies released in 2025 from 1 to 431. That's a tall task, but based on reviews and detailed breakdowns, it featured the likes of One Battle After Another and Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair in the top two spots. Another late addition was Marty Supreme, breaking the top 10 at No. 9. However, it was the bottom of the list that stood out to many.
With a Metascore of just 30, The Electric State checked in as the No. 6 worst-rated movie on Metacritic. Here's a look at the bottom 10, with their Metascores:
- No. 431: War of the Worlds (Metascore of 6)
- No. 430: Bride Hard (23)
- No. 429: Five Nights at Freddy's 2 (26)
- No. 428: The Strangers: Chapter 2 (28)
- No. 427: Hurry Up Tomorrow (29)
- No. 426: The Electric State (30)
- No. 425: Julie & Romeo (31)
- No. 424: Smurfs (31)
- No. 423: Modi - Three Days on the Wing of Madness (32)
- No. 422: Regretting You (33)
It is worth noting that a few other high-profile movies and films with big-name stars from 2025 ranked extremely low on the list. This includes Captain America: Brave New World at No. 393, Anaconda starring Jack Black and Paul Rudd (No. 388) and A Minecraft Movie (No. 385).
The $320 Million Question: How Did 'The Electric State' Become so Expensive?
The cost of The Electric State was a popular topic following its release, and, as ScreenRant reported, it was Netflix's most expensive movie. Puck News was the first to report the $320 million budget, which several other outlets also later reported.
However, the question of how The Electric State landed with such a lofty production cost for the streaming giant is an interesting one. As ScreenRant highlighted, the many robots in the movie likely played a big part, as CGI and/or motion capture were used to create them.
The highest cost that may have come with Netflix's 2025 release, though, may have been the actual casting. The Electric State was a star-studded affair, and it went beyond the two headliners in Brown and Pratt. The duo was joined by Ke Huy Quan, Anthony Mackie, Stanley Tucci, Woody Harrelson, Jenny Slate and Giancarlo Esposito, among others.
Regardless, it was a hefty price tag to create The Electric State, and the reviews certainly didn't live up to Netflix's hopeful expectations. Beyond Metacritic, the critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes was even lower, at 14 percent based on 157 reviews.
