One killed, three injured in gun attack on police post in Pakistan’s Bajaur
A civilian was killed and three others, including two police officers, were wounded after unidentified gunmen attacked a police post in Pakistan’s Bajaur district, officials said.
Local officials in Pakistan said a civilian was killed and three others, including two police officers, were wounded after unidentified gunmen attacked a police post in Bajaur district early Saturday.
According to the Dawn newspaper, the attack occurred around 2 a.m. at a police checkpoint in the mountainous Kohi Sar area of Barang tehsil, about 22 kilometres from Khar, the district headquarters.
Bajaur police spokesman Asrar Khan said the victim was identified as 60-year-old Naseem Gul, a local resident. He added that two police officers and a school guard were injured in the assault.
The wounded were taken to the district headquarters hospital in Khar, where officials said their condition was stable. Police said the attackers used both light and heavy weapons before fleeing the scene.
Bajaur, located in Pakistan’s northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghanistan border, has long been vulnerable to militant violence due to its rugged terrain and proximity to former militant strongholds.
The district has witnessed repeated attacks on security forces in recent years, despite large-scale military operations aimed at restoring stability in the former tribal regions.
Following Saturday’s incident, police and security forces launched a joint search and clearance operation in the surrounding area to track down the attackers, officials said.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, and investigations are ongoing.
The incident comes amid a broader rise in militant violence across Pakistan. Data from the Pakistan Institute for Peace Studies shows armed attacks increased by 34% in 2025 compared with the previous year.
The institute recorded at least 699 militant attacks nationwide in 2025, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring about 1,366 others, a trend that has intensified since the Taliban returned to power in Afghanistan in 2021.
