Yes, You Can Grow a Lush Lawn in Clay Soil—Here’s How Pros Do It

If you live on a property with clay soil, then you know how hard it is to grow a lush lawn. The compact structure of this soil type makes it difficult for roots to grow and robs grass of the oxygen, nutrients, and water it needs to thrive. Luckily there are measures you can take to improve clay soil to make it more hospitable for grass. By periodically aerating the soil, adding compost, and choosing the right grass species, your lawn can still be the envy of your neighbors. Ahead, we'll take you through how to grow grass in clay soil, with expert advice from Drake Decker of DeckerLD.com, a landscaping supply store in Kaukuna, WI.

Why Clay Soil Is Tough on Grass

Clay soil is challenging because it’s dense, Decker says, which prevents water and oxygen from penetrating the soil to reach the grass roots. The hard nature of the soil also makes it difficult for grass roots to penetrate through them. And while clay soil is nutrient rich, it's so compact that those nutrients don’t reach grass roots.

Can You Grow Grass in Clay Soil?

Only hardy, tough grasses are capable of tolerating clay soil. The grass must be able to develop deep root systems, which is essential for acquiring nutrients and water in compact soil conditions. Clay soil also holds onto moisture in cool seasons than dries out in summer heat. “Grass struggles in both conditions, which is why lawns on clay often look thin, patchy, or stressed compared to lawns in sandy or loamy soils,” Decker says.

While irrigation can help grass grow in clay soil, many grass types will fail in clay conditions even when properly watered. That’s because the density of clay soil can make it difficult for the water to penetrate the soil and reach grass roots. Overwatering doesn’t help as this can cause clay soil to become soggy. Since clay soil holds onto water, this excessive moisture can suffocate the roots while also making the grass more susceptible to diseases.

Best Grass Types for Clay Soil

The best grass seed for clay soil includes tall fescue, perennial ryegrass and sometimes Kentucky bluegrass, according to Decker.

Tall Fescue

Tall fescue develops a deep root system that’s well united for pulling nutrients and water out of dense clay soil. It's also drought tolerant and holds up to foot traffic well. That said, it can still be prone to issues with soil compaction, so annual aeration is a must.

Perennial Ryegrass

Perennial ryegrass's quick germination time and rapid growth make it ideal for growing in clay soil. It also has a strong root system that’s capable of breaking through compacted soil. Plus, it tolerates wet soil better than most cool-season grasses. Ryegrass does require watering, especially during hot dry periods, and periodic aeration to allow nutrients to reach the roots.

Kentucky Bluegrass

Kentucky Bluegrass isn’t great for clay soil, but it can thrive if you amend the soil with organic matter and aerate it annually.

Warm-Season Grass for Clay Soil

Bermuda

This grass has rhizomes that can grow through dense soil, making it ideal for thicker clay soils.

Zoysia

With its deep root structure and low water needs, zoysiagrass is another great warm-season grass for dense clay soils.

Buffalo

Buffalo grass has a deep, robust root system and requires little water to thrive, making it another great warm-season grass pick for clay soil.

Best Grass Seed Mixes for Clay Soil

While you can go with a single grass type for your lawn, seed mixes often outperform regular seed, Decker says. “Usually a seed mix is the best approach because it allows something to get going faster and stronger,” he says. “If one seed variety struggles, another type in the mix will take off.”

Check the label on the grass blend for those that include a mix of tall fescue, ryegrass, and fine fescue. For example a mix of 70 percent tall fescue, 20 percent rye grass, and 10 percent creeping red fescue would be an ideal mix. This mix develops a hardy root system and grows quickly to provide quick cover over clay soil, while also being drought tolerant.

Also check the bag for seed that has been enhanced with endophytes. Endophytes are a fungi that lives inside the grass plant, giving it resistance to pests, drought, and diseases.

How to Prepare Clay Soil for Grass Seed

Core Aeration

Use a core aerator machine to aerate the lawn to prep it for grass seed. This prep is crucial as it creates small plugs in the soil that allow oxygen, water, and nutrients to reach the grass roots. It also breaks up the soil, allowing for better drainage.

Topdressing With Compost

Add a 1/2-inch inch layer of compost to clay soil to prep it for grass seed. Top dressing clay soil adds nutrients, while improving the soil’s structure so it’s less compact, allowing for better drainage and air circulation.

What Not to Add to Clay Soil

Not all soil amendments are good for clay soil. Never add sand to clay soil. While this may seem like it would break up the compacted soil, it actually gives it a cement-like consistency, making drainage and aeration even worse. You should also not till wet clay soil. This only further compacts the soil, creating dense layers that are very difficult for grass roots to penetrate.

How to Plant Grass Seed in Clay Soil

  • Step 1: Loosen the surface properly.

Break up the first few inches of soil using a spading fork or tiller. “The goal is to create a looser top layer that allows seed to establish without drowning or drying out,” Decker says.  If you’re seeding a large area, consider renting a rear tine tiller to break up the soil.

  • Step 2: Add compost.

Next, work compost into the soil to add nutrients and improve its soil structure and drainage. “The compost improves drainage while also helping the soil retain moisture,” Decker says.

  • Step 3: Rake the soil.

Create an even bed for the seed by raking the soil smooth, breaking up large clumps of soil in the process. Use a hose with a sprayer to moisten the soil but not so much that it’s saturated.

  • Step 4: Apply seed at the correct rate.

Use a spreader to drop seed at the appropriate rate as listed on the seed bag. Spread the seed evenly, then lightly rake it in to create good seed-to-soil contact. Cover with a thin layer of straw.

  • Step 5: Water the soil.

Water the soil for five to 10 minutes two to four times each day for the first two weeks to keep the top layer of soil moist. Reduce watering to once a day once sprouts begin to appear. “After seeding, consistent watering is important until the grass has grown in,” Decker says.

Common Clay Soil Lawn Problems (and How to Fix Them)

Water Pooling and Runoff

The compact nature of clay soil makes it susceptible to pooling and run-off in heavy rain. “Poor drainage is a common problem, which leads to standing water and root rot,” Decker says. You can improve drainage by working compost into the top layer of soil.

Thin or Patchy Grass

Clay soil starves grass of the nutrients, oxygen and moisture it needs to grow and flourish, leading to thin and patchy grass. “It is common to get thinning, bare spots, weeds, and uneven growth throughout the season if you don't stay up on your grass health,” Decker says. There are several things you can do to promote thicker, healthier turf. Aerating the soil allows for water and oxygen to reach grass roots and fertilizer to improve the nutrients in the soil. When reseeding, use a seed mix that’s designed for clay soils.

Compaction From Foot Traffic

The dense composition of clay soil makes it susceptible to compaction from heavy foot traffic. There are few things you can do to combat this. Aerate the soil to break it up, then add organic matter in the form of compost to change the soil structure. Finally, limit foot traffic on the soil or add paths in the form of stepping stones.

Moss and Weeds Taking Over

Clay soil’s compact makeup and propensity to retain moisture for a long period of time makes it susceptible to moss and weed growth. Make the soil less hospitable for both by aerating the soil and adding compost to improve the soil drainage.

Ongoing Lawn Care Tips for Clay Soil

Mowing Height Adjustments

Keep your lawn higher than average—about three inches—to shade the soil and promote strong root growth. “Mowing at a slightly higher height protects roots and reduces stress,” Decker says.

Fertilize Without Making Compaction Worse

Don’t fertilize haphazardly. Test the soil using a soil test kit and add fertilizer based on the results. Use slow-release organic fertilizers, which will help build soil structure instead of contributing to compaction.

When to Aerate Again

Decker says aerating once a year is one of the most effective ways to get grass to thrive in clay soil. Aerate in the fall as part of your reseeding ritual. You can also aerate in the spring when the grass is growing. Don’t aerate in the summer or winter when the grass will have a harder time recovering from the stress of aeration.

FAQs About Grass Seed for Clay Soil

Can I use regular grass seed on clay?

You can use regular grass seed on clay soil, but you’ll need to prep the soil by aerating it and amending the first three to four inches with compost. You should also choose a variety that’s best suited for growing in dense soil, such as tall fescue or ryegrass.

Should I mix sand into clay soil?

You should never mix sand into clay soil. Sand adds more dense material to the soil, giving it a concrete-like consistency, which makes it even more difficult to grow grass.

How long does grass take to establish in clay?

It can take several years for grass to establish itself in clay soil. During that time, you’ll need to take care of it with regular aeration and proper watering and by improving the soil with compost and top soil.

Is sod better than seed for clay soil?

Though it takes longer to establish itself, seed is the better choice because it will develop a deep root system in the soil with proper soil amendments, aeration, and watering. Sod offers instant gratification, but getting the roots to grow into clay soil can be more of a challenge, requiring greater soil preparation prior to installing the sod. Installing sod is also a greater risk, considering it costs significantly more than seed.
