New Year reset: Starting 2026 with clarity and a renewed inner compass
January has a way of tempting us into big declarations. New goals. New routines. New commitments.
This year will be different, we tell ourselves. And in many ways, it can be.
But after working with leaders, professionals, and families over the years, I’ve noticed something important: A new year doesn’t feel new unless you feel renewed.
Without an internal reset, you may find yourself repeating old patterns, reacting to old stress or carrying the emotional residue of last year straight into this one. You might set new goals but still feel tired. You might desire change but feel pulled back by the momentum of what came before.
So before you focus on what you want to do this year, I’d like to invite you to consider a different question—one that changes everything:
What energy do you want to bring into this new year?
This single reflection has the power to redirect your choices, your relationships, your finances, and even your sense of well-being. Because your energy — how centered, grounded, and resourced you feel—is the most accurate predictor of how you will navigate the opportunities and challenges ahead.
Energy comes before action
In our culture, we tend to value busyness and productivity. The assumption is that working harder – or planning better – will solve everything. But sustainable change doesn’t flow from pressure. It flows from alignment.
You’ve likely experienced this yourself:
—A day when you were rested and clear and suddenly a difficult conversation felt more possible.
—A moment when you felt purpose-driven and the next right step became obvious.
—A season where you felt depleted and even small tasks felt heavier than they should.
This is the power of your internal state. When your energy is scattered or tense, life becomes more effortful. When your energy is steady and aligned, everything works better.
This is true whether you’re leading a company, managing a household, supporting aging parents, navigating relationships or making decisions about money. When your inner system is grounded, you make wiser choices. You communicate more clearly. You set healthier boundaries. You are responsive instead of reactive.
And so, as we kick off 2026, I encourage you to focus less on resolutions and more on resetting the inner conditions that help you thrive.
Gentle reflection
Part of starting a new year strong is to release what has not worked in this current year – frustrations, disappointments, unresolved tensions, or moments of self-judgment. Once you have done this, it is important to look toward the new year with curiosity.
Here are a few gentle questions to guide your New-Year Reset:
1. What energized me last year?
Think of the people, activities, or responsibilities that left you feeling alive, optimistic, or connected. These are clues. They point not only to what you enjoy, but to what strengthens your resilience.
2. What drained me?
We often ignore the quiet drains—habits, relationships, commitments, or routines that cost us more energy than we realize. Naming them creates space to make different choices.
3. What do I want to experience more of this year?
Joy? Connection? Ease? Creativity? Financial confidence? Focus? Purpose?
Wanting these things doesn’t make you self-indulgent. It makes you human.
4. How do I want to feel as I move through my days?
We rarely ask ourselves this, yet the answer sets the tone for everything. Would you like to feel steady? Grounded? Energized? Peaceful? Empowered?
5. What small shift would help me feel more supported?
Often, sustainable change begins with one adjustment—not a complete reinvention. Give yourself five quiet minutes with these questions. You may be surprised by what emerges.
Choose a guiding word
A simple way to anchor your reset is to choose one word or phrase that captures the energy you want to embody this year. Many readers and clients tell me this becomes a powerful compass.
Your word might be something like one of these: Calm. Steady. Connected. Courageous. Present. Whole. Inspired. Well.
Or it might be a phrase such as: “Move slowly.” “Choose what matters.” “Protect my energy.” “Live with intention.”
Let your word choose you. Notice what feels like a relief. Notice what feels like an invitation.
Then, choose one small behavior that supports that word. If your word is “steady,” perhaps it’s a calmer morning routine. If your word is “connected,” maybe it’s one meaningful conversation each week. If your word is “well,” it could be prioritizing sleep, movement, or mental renewal.
Small steps, taken consistently, can shift an entire year.
Weekly habit reset
One of the most powerful practices I recommend is what I call the “one protected hour.”
Choose one hour a week that belongs only to you—no problem-solving, no caregiving, no multitasking. This becomes your recalibration hour. Use it to reflect, to breathe, to journal, to walk, or to sit quietly with a cup of something warm. You might use it to reconnect with your guiding word or ask yourself: What do I need this week to feel supported?
This simple rhythm restores clarity and resilience. It gives you back to yourself in small but profound ways.
Make better decisions
Because this column is Women, Money & Mindset, it’s worth saying this plainly: Your financial and life decisions improve when your internal world feels balanced.
—When you are calm, you negotiate better.
—When you are centered, you save and invest with more confidence.
—When you have clarity, you set healthier boundaries with your time and resources.
—When you feel steady, you respond with wisdom instead of urgency.
A strong financial plan begins with a strong emotional foundation.
A Year for greater fulfillment
You may have noticed a theme emerging in these articles — one that I’ll be exploring more deeply over the coming months: the connection between energy, purpose, resilience, and fulfillment. This is something many of us are longing for, especially as our world becomes more complex and uncertain.
A new year is an invitation — not to prove more, but to become more aligned with what truly matters to you. Not pressure. Not perfection. Just clarity and a renewed sense of who you are becoming.
As you step into 2026, give yourself permission to begin gently. Instead of measuring your year by how much you accomplish, consider measuring it by how aligned you feel, how supported you are, and how meaningfully you show up for your life.
Your energy is one of your greatest assets. Tend to it with care. Reset it with intention. And let it guide you toward a year of deeper fulfillment, purpose, and well-being.
