Winter Storm Warning: Flooding, 'Dangerous Rip Tides' Anticipated This Week

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an urgent winter storm warning for cities in the Los Angeles area, predicting dangerous rip currents and possible flooding.

High Surf, Flood Advisories Issued for These California Counties

As of 6:54 a.m. local time on Jan. 4, 2026, coastal flood and high surf advisories have been in effect for beaches in San Luis Obispo County, Ventura County, and those on the central coast of Santa Barbara County. The coastal flood advisory will remain in effect until 1 p.m. local time on Jan. 4. The high flood advisories, meanwhile, will remain in effect until 10 a.m. local time on Jan. 5.

Officials predict that San Luis Obispo County, Ventura County, and Santa Barbara Central Coast County beaches will see extremely dangerous rip currents and “large breaking waves” of between 10 and 14 feet, while “minor coastal flooding is expected.” On Sunday, peak high tides are expected between 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. local time, while the surf is expected to build and peak during the afternoon hours.

NWS Warns That 'Flooding of Sea Water Is Likely'

The NWS advises that “flooding of sea water is likely, around the time of high tide, over vulnerable low-lying coastal areas such as parking lots, beaches, and walkways.” While the flooding is not expected to cause “significant damage to roads or structures,” there is “an increased risk for ocean drowning. Rip currents can pull swimmers and surfers out to sea. Large breaking waves can cause injury, wash people off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats near shore.”

Officials urge those in the affected counties to “take the necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers.” They also advise that “rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks.”

Dangerous Weather Expected to Hit Other Parts of the Country

These winter storm warnings follow close on the heels of similar advisories for the Midwest and Alaska, the latter of which is expected to be walloped by 115 MPH winds and temperatures of -65 degrees.
