At least 30 killed as gunmen attack market in Nigeria, officials say
At least 30 people were killed when armed attackers stormed a busy market in northern Nigeria, torching stalls, looting food and abducting civilians, authorities said.
At least 30 people were killed when armed attackers stormed the Kasuwan Daji market, underscoring persistent insecurity in parts of Nigeria.
Reuters said the assailants entered the market, setting stalls ablaze, looting food supplies and spreading panic among traders and shoppers.
According to the report, several people were also abducted during the attack, with local authorities and community groups continuing efforts to locate and rescue those taken.
Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said he had ordered security agencies to identify and punish those responsible and to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities.
Armed gangs, often referred to locally as bandits, have carried out repeated attacks across northwestern and central Nigeria in recent years, targeting villages, markets and highways.
These groups are typically motivated by ransom, cattle rustling and control of territory, exploiting weak security presence in remote areas to carry out mass killings and kidnappings.
The attack adds to growing public pressure on the government to restore security and prevent militants from operating with impunity in rural regions.
