Preps of the week: Marin Catholic puts on a show to win Bambauer
The Marin Catholic boys basketball team has been on an absolute tear during the holiday tournament season. Last week, the Wildcats added to their already impressive resume as the hosts of the Bambauer Classic, taking down University in overtime to win the tournament for the first time since 2011.
Archie Williams and San Domenico also fared well at the Bambauer and, along with MC, are the top three ranked teams in Marin as the calendar flips to 2026.
The Terra Linda and San Rafael boys teams also got strong performances last week. Redwood, San Marin, and Archie Williams led the way on the girls side.
Joe Hammond, Jack Herman, Oliver Myers, Henry Dibble, and Bentley Morrow, Marin Catholic boys basketball
The host Wildcats got contributions from up and down the roster while averaging an astonishing 98 points per game during the semifinals and final of the Bambauer Classic. MC defeated Lincoln 100-69 on Monday then outlasted University 96-95 in an overtime classic on Tuesday. Hammond, the team’s point guard, was named tournament MVP after scoring 13 points in the semifinals and dishing out 10 assists in the final. Herman was the team’s top scorer with 23 against University and had 14 against Lincoln. Myers led the way with 15 points against Lincoln then hit six 3-pointers en route to a 20-point night against University. Morrow scored 10 in the first game and added 18 in the second while also providing one of the game’s key plays – a block at the rim against University High star Lucas Lau as MC trailed by 1 in the final 15 seconds. Dibble, who scored 13 points in the final, hit a clutch 3-pointer inside the final minute to pull MC within 1 then made the game-winning free throws with 2.2 seconds left. MC heads into MCAL play as the No. 3 ranked team in the North Coast Section according to MaxPreps.com.
Meezy Butler and Brian Wright, Archie Williams boys basketball
Butler scored 21 points with five rebounds and five assists while being named to the all-tournament team as the Peregrine Falcons took sixth at the Bambauer following a 62-60 loss to Heritage on Tuesday. Wright scored 18 points with eight boards in a 64-51 win against Acalanes on Monday then added 17 with six rebounds against Heritage. Archie Williams is Marin’s second-best team entering league play, according to MaxPreps, which ranks the Peregrine Falcons as No. 12 in the NCS.
Ika Jokhadze and Oskar Valiauga, San Domenico boys basketball
Jokhadze poured in 27 points as San Domenico defeated Montgomery 55-47 last Monday at the Bambauer Classic. Valiauga, an all-tournament selection, had 16 points against Montgomery then scored 20 as the Panthers claimed the consolation championship following a 45-31 win against Urban on Tuesday. The Panthers are ranked 18th in NCS by MaxPreps, third best among Marin teams.
Evan Brewster and Wes Harrison, Terra Linda boys basketball
Brewster had a trio of big scoring games as TL finished as consolation champions at the Sonoma County Classic. Brewster had 17 in a 53-50 loss to Cardinal Newman on Monday then had 25 Tuesday in a 74-40 win against Redwood Christian. Brewster had 22 points and 13 rebounds en route to all-tournament honors as TL posted a 60-44 win against Palo Alto. Harrison’s big night came in the second game when he hit seven 3-pointers and scored 25 points.
Jax Aguillon and Luke Shapiro, San Rafael boys basketball
Aguillon scored the Bulldogs’ final four points in regulation, including a game-tying basket with 2 seconds left as San Rafael rallied for a 61-59 double-overtime victory against Campolindo to take fifth place at the Damian Lillard Classic on Tuesday. Aguillon scored five of his 19 points in overtime. Shapiro had 25 points and eight rebounds against Campolindo a day after posting 28 points, 10 rebounds, and four assists in a win against Santa Cruz on Monday.
Addy Timmel and Eleanna Schram, San Marin girls basketball
Timmel led the Mustangs in scoring in both of their victories last week, scoring 16 in a 44-40 win against Liberty Ranch on Monday and 18 in a 57-54 overtime win against American (Fremont) on Saturday. Schram scored nine points against Liberty Ranch and 12 more against American while drawing the tough defensive assignment against Shirina Shi, who is scoring 31 points per game this season. San Marin is the No. 2 team in the county, sitting at No. 20 in MaxPreps’ NCS rankings.
Reese Patton and Delphina Dong, Archie Williams girls basketball
Patton continued to pour in points, scoring 54 as the Peregrine Falcons went 2-1 last week. Patton scored 26 in a 59-37 win against Analy on Monday then scored 11 in a 56-32 win against Kennedy (Fremont) on Friday. Archie Williams battled undefeated Windsor on Saturday with Patton scoring 17 in a 62-45 loss as the Jaguars stretched their record to 14-0. Dong shined in Friday’s win against Kennedy, making all five of her 3-point attempts en route to a team-high 17 points.
Kitty White and Brooke Denler, Redwood girls basketball
White scored a team-high 23 points as the Giants placed second at the SoCal Holiday Classic following a 51-46 loss to Orange Lutheran on Tuesday. Denler scored in double digits in both of Redwood’s tournament games last week, leading the way with 12 in a 53-32 win against Heritage on Monday then scoring 11 on Tuesday. The Giants enter MCAL play as Marin’s top-ranked team, sitting at No. 5 in NCS according to MaxPreps.
Dylan Morton, Redwood boys wrestling
Morton picked up three pins in his four victories en route to a third-place finish at 132 pounds at the Joe Rios Memorial in Chico over the weekend.
