Reed Union School District trustee resigns
An eight-year member of the Reed Union School District board of trustees resigned on Dec. 31.
Sherry Wangenheim was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board in late 2017 and then elected to four-year terms in 2018 and in 2022. In a letter to education officials, Wangenheim said she was stepping down because she and her family are moving out of the country in June.
“I will truly value this experience for the rest of my life,” she wrote. “I am proud of the things we have accomplished working together.”
Wangenheim was board president in 2020, 2021 and 2025.
The board, which has 60 days to fill the seat, will decide at its meeting on Jan. 13 whether to appoint an interim replacement for the balance of Wangenheim’s term or hold a special election, said Shelby Tsai, the board president. Wangenheim’s term expires in November.
“Sherry always put the best interests of the students, staff and families of this district at the forefront of each decision and led with tremendous integrity and compassion,” Tsai said. “Under her leadership, the district worked to close structural achievement gaps, developed new ways to measure student progress and fostered safe, inclusive learning environments that emphasize kindness, emotional awareness and community connections.”
Wangenheim, a financial planner, ran unopposed for the seat in the 2018 elections. Four years later, she was one of the victorious candidates in a four-way race for three seats.
Wangenheim ran on a platform to help students recover academically, socially and emotionally from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. She also campaigned on the need for the district to get back on track with facilities planning and other fiscal issues.
Wangenheim, a Tiburon resident since 2002, has four children who went through Reed Union schools. Prior to serving on the board, she was a volunteer at the schools and served on the board of the district’s parent teacher association.
The Reed Union School District serves about 1,100 students from transitional kindergarten to eighth grade at Bel Aire Elementary School, Reed Elementary School and Del Mar Middle School. The district covers students from families in Tiburon, Belvedere and a section of east Corte Madera.
