Israel says Iran plotting assassination of Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa
Israeli military sources warn Iran and allied hostile forces are planning to assassinate Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa amid rising regional tensions.
Israeli military sources have warned that Iran, working with hostile forces, is allegedly planning an assassination attempt against Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, according to Israeli media reports.
The warning, reported by The Jerusalem Post, comes as Israel and Syria have begun limited diplomatic contacts, against a backdrop of heightened regional tensions and fragile security dynamics.
Israeli security assessments say al-Sharaa is facing “real and credible threats,” forcing him to significantly increase personal security measures while trying to consolidate control over his government.
Israeli defense officials argue that these threats underscore what they call the “lessons of October 7,” reinforcing their view that Israel’s military presence in Syrian territory remains necessary.
From Israel’s perspective, this presence is described as a “primary shield” to protect Israeli border communities from cross-border attacks and emerging threats.
Syria has remained deeply fragmented after years of war, with multiple armed groups, foreign actors and intelligence services competing for influence across the country.
Iran has long been accused by Israel of expanding its military and intelligence footprint in Syria, allegations Tehran has repeatedly denied, while Damascus maintains strategic ties with Iran.
According to reports, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has chaired several high-level security meetings in recent months, bringing together senior military and intelligence officials to assess evolving risks.
Analysts say any attempt on the Syrian president’s life could sharply escalate regional tensions, complicate diplomatic openings, and further destabilize a region already strained by overlapping conflicts and mistrust.
