Why CBS Edited Out Tony Dokoupil's 'Big Problems' Flub During 'Evening News' Debut
New CBS Evening News anchor Tony Dokoupil had a major mishap on the air last night, and there’s an update after what went down.
During his live debut on Monday (January 5), the 45-year-old news anchor had a teleprompter snafu when an image on screen showed a photo of Senator Mark Kelly, but the teleprompter had text having to do with Gov. Tim Walz.
Tony said, after tripping over some words, “To other news now, to Governor Walz. No, we’re going to do Mark Kelly. First day! First day, big problems here,” he said as he tried to recover.
Then there was more awkwardness. He said, “Uh, are we going to Kelly here? Or are we going to go to [journalist] Jonah Kaplan?…we’re doing Mark Kelly, possibly demoted from his retired rank of captain in the Navy.”
After this happened, the segment actually did not air in the west coast airing, and has now disappeared from feeds if you go watch.
Now, there’s an explanation why.
