“Upon arrival, the adult male victim was found suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported by EMS to Memorial Health University Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries,” the statement read.
Per the release, Tyler Linn, 30, was arrested after remaining on the scene. He was charged with murder and aggravated assault.
While not named in the statement, the victim was identified as Matthew Traywick by Savannah Morning News, WTOC and WJCL.
Mayor Van Johnson provided additional details about the shooting in a statement on Facebook, saying that it was seemingly related to a parking dispute.
“Today, our community was shaken by a tragic act of violence in a place where people should feel safe, a parking lot at the Target on Abercorn Street,” he wrote, adding, “The Savannah Police Department responded to reports of a shooting that occurred during an alleged argument over a parking dispute.”
He continued, writing, “Our hearts go out to the family and loved ones of the victim. No disagreement over a parking space, or anything else should ever end in the loss of life. This needless, unnecessary violence underscores the daily pain felt by families across our city and the urgency of our collective work to reduce gun violence and strengthen community safety.”
He confirmed that an investigation into the matter is still ongoing.
It was not immediately clear if Traywick was involved in a dispute with Linn or if the pair knew each other prior to the incident.
A GoFundMe organized to benefit the victim’s wife Micayla and their three children has raised more than $102,000 of its $160,000 goal at the time of publishing.
“Micayla and her three young children are facing an unimaginable loss after the sudden passing of her husband, Matt. As the sole provider for their family, Matt’s unexpected death has left Micayla with the overwhelming challenge of supporting her children through both emotional and financial hardship,” a description on the fundraiser reads, noting that the mourning family now faces “immediate expenses and uncertainty of how to manage ongoing needs without Matt’s steady support.”
Additional reporting by WTOC suggested that Linn is being held without bond. It was not immediately clear how he would respond to the charges.
Just Jared reached out to the Savannah Police Department and Target for additional comment, but had not heard back at the time of publication.
