Pakistan to Set Up Special Unit to Protect Chinese Nationals
Pakistan’s interior minister said a special security unit will be formed in Islamabad to protect Chinese nationals amid persistent militant threats.
Pakistan’s interior minister said the country will establish a special security unit in Islamabad dedicated to protecting Chinese nationals, underscoring heightened concerns over the safety of foreign workers.
According to a statement from Pakistan’s interior ministry, Mohsin Naqvi raised the issue during a meeting with China’s Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong in Beijing.
Naqvi said protecting Chinese citizens and joint projects remains Pakistan’s top priority, as militants have repeatedly targeted Chinese nationals across several provinces.
The ministry said both sides also agreed to develop a fast-track joint counterterrorism mechanism, including expanded training programs to strengthen police capacity and operational coordination.
Chinese nationals working on infrastructure and energy projects in Pakistan have frequently been targeted by militant groups, particularly in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where security risks remain high.
Data released by Pakistan’s National Counter Terrorism Authority in December 2024 showed that at least 20 Chinese citizens were killed and 34 wounded in terrorist attacks between 2021 and late 2024.
The two countries also discussed cooperation on preventing cybercrime, signaling broader security collaboration as Islamabad seeks to reassure Beijing of its commitment to protecting Chinese interests.
