China Urges U.S. Not to Use Other Countries as Pretext to Pursue Greenland Interests
China on Monday criticised the United States over renewed comments on Greenland, saying Washington should not use other countries to pursue its strategic interests.
China on Monday warned the United States against using other countries as a pretext to advance its own strategic interests, amid renewed remarks by President Donald Trump about Greenland.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said Washington was “making excuses” over Greenland, responding to Trump’s claim that China or Russia could take control of the Arctic island if the United States did not act.
Trump has repeatedly raised the idea of purchasing or taking control of Greenland since returning to power, framing the issue as a matter of U.S. national security and global competition.
The remarks have drawn sharp reactions from Beijing, which said the United States should respect international norms and the sovereignty of other countries.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, occupies a strategically important position in the Arctic and is rich in natural resources, including rare earth minerals. It has gained increased attention amid growing geopolitical rivalry in the region.
The Arctic has become a focal point for major powers, including the United States, China and Russia, due to melting ice opening new shipping routes and access to untapped resources, according to international analysts.
Denmark and several European countries have strongly rejected Trump’s comments, stressing that Greenland is not for sale and that its future can only be decided by its people.
