Canadian citizen killed at the hands of the Iranian authorities, Anita Anand says
Foreign minister Anita Anand in a social post on Thursday said a Canadian citizen has died in Iran.
“Peaceful protests by the Iranian people — asking that their voices be heard in the face of the Iranian regime’s repression and ongoing human rights violations — has led the regime to flagrantly disregard human life. This violence must end. Canada condemns and calls for an immediate end to the Iranian regime’s violence,” she posted on X.
Anand extended her deepest condolences and said the officials are in contact with the victim’s family in Canada.

The Canadian killed has not yet been identified. Global Affairs Canada confirmed the death, expressing condolences to the family, but the government department did not provide any details.
More than two weeks of protests were initially sparked by Iran’s ailing economy but eventually grew to target the theocratic regime than runs the country.
The death toll from the protests in Iran has reached 2,571, U.S.-based HRANA, a human rights group, told Reuters on Wednesday, as the Islamic Republic’s rulers try to quash the biggest wave of dissent in years, sparking threats of U.S. intervention.
Also on Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said in the Oval Office that he had been told the killings were subsiding.
“We’ve been told that the killing in Iran is stopping — it’s stopped,” Trump told reporters. “And there’s no plan for executions.”
Trump said he was “informed by very important sources on the other side” about the decision not to proceed with the killings, reported Bloomberg, adding he would be “very upset” if the information proved untrue and the violent crackdown continued.
The first execution of a protester had been planned for Wednesday, but there has been no confirmation that the death sentence imposed on 26-year-old Iranian shopkeeper, Erfan Soltani has been carried out.
