Trump Threatens Tariffs on Nations Opposing U.S. Control of Greenland
U.S. President Donald Trump warned he may impose tariffs on nations opposing American control over Greenland, calling anything less “unacceptable.”
U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to levy new tariffs on countries that do not support his plan to bring Greenland under U.S. control. He said that anything short of full American oversight of the Arctic island would be “unacceptable.”
European leaders have repeatedly rejected Trump’s assertions. France and Germany have stated that Greenland, under Danish sovereignty for over 600 years, cannot be transferred to U.S. control without consent.
Greenland is strategically important for the U.S., hosting early-warning radar stations and offering key military advantages in the Arctic. Analysts say controlling Greenland could enhance U.S. influence in the region amid rising competition with Russia and China.
Jean-Noël Barrot, France’s foreign minister, stressed the EU would not allow another country to infringe on Danish borders, while German Chancellor Merz highlighted the importance of respecting national sovereignty.
The U.S. has explored Arctic expansion for decades, with Greenland’s natural resources and location making it vital for defense and trade routes. The island’s autonomy and climate change impacts further complicate international negotiations.
Trump argued that U.S. control over Greenland would strengthen NATO, stating the alliance “would be far more powerful and effective with Greenland in American hands.” He framed the proposal as a security imperative for the Western alliance.
Some critics view Trump’s comments as provocative and unrealistic, warning that unilateral actions could strain U.S.-European relations and disrupt cooperation on Arctic security and climate issues.
While Trump’s Greenland ambitions face firm opposition from European allies and legal challenges under international law, the remarks signal Washington’s continued interest in expanding strategic influence in the Arctic.
