Why We Love This Deal
Lately, Men’s Journal has uncovered fantastic deals from Smartwool that go beyond the brand’s legendary socks. The company’s merino wool thermal base layers and quarter-zips provide a great service; high moisture-wicking with odor-fighting capabilities that keep you cozy and smelling fresh even when going hard. But, with great capabilities come high prices, $60 or more, even on sale. For those of us who don’t need such a high-octane shirt and don’t mind doing laundry, REI is selling a fantastic alternative for $31 that's worth a look.
The REI Co-op Swiftland Long-Sleeve Running T-Shirt is 31% off at REI. It’s made of 100% polyester, not fancy merino, but it is going to get the job done for the vast majority of people, and it happens to be ultra-lightweight as well. So, whether you're jogging for fitness or getting in a weekend hike, this one is well worth the pick-up if you're not ready to drop merino wool money.

What makes this a running shirt is its lightweight fabric. Using what REI calls SwiftTek polyester, the fabric has microventilation. In other words, it’s subtly perforated in ways the eye can’t see. That makes the shirt blend in while providing sweat-wicking and fast-drying comfort during your workouts. Plus, the shirt is stitched with raglan sleeves and underarm gussets, a fancy way of saying the shirt was shaped to conform to the way your body moves, not to enhance its appearance on a rack.
Currently, the shirt is available in four colors, though road runners wanting to be extra visible might be most pleased with the bright “Solar Red” option. While there’s a wide-ranging size variety, from small to 3XL, those shopping for tall sizes will want to check out each color.

What Shoppers Are Saying
If you’re worried about polyester’s comfort, don’t be. As one shopper, who on at least one occasion took the shirt out for a 15-mile train run (with a 20-pound weight vest on, at that!) said, the “fabric is soft and wicks perspiration fast enough to not weigh it down.”
Another, who relayed that he was 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, bought the 2XL tall size of the shirt. What astounded him the most as a tall guy? “The shirt is comfortable and crazy light.” Even this extra-large size weighed under 6 ounces, not something he was used to. If you’ve avoided dedicated base layers due to weight concerns, this is a truly good entry point.
The REI Co-op Swiftland Long-Sleeve Running T-Shirt is now just $31 at REI, and a fantastic pickup for the everyman who doesn’t want to pay for gear that’s beyond his scope.
