Could This Be the Weekend Nazaré Reaches 100 Feet?
After somewhat cooling down since the extraordinary run of late November into December, the North Atlantic is revving up and due to deliver two new swells with some serious XXL juice at the end of this week.
While a lot could change in between now and then, forecasts are calling for a swell much larger than what was seen at the Tudor Nazaré Challenge with readings of 9m at 17 seconds, compared to 4m at 17 seconds on the day of the competition. Could this be the run that finally produces a 100-foot wave?
I surely won't be packing my board bags for this one but given that there's no XL action happening in the Pacific, it's safe to say that there will likely be an exodus of big wave surfers from the West Coast and Hawaii making their way across the pond to try their luck in the Atlantic. Stormy conditions are quite likely with swells of this size, the main question is where--and when--will the clean windows be?
As we saw in December, Ireland proved to be the call on several occasions with the historic day at Mullaghmore (December 18th) being perhaps the best day of big wave surfing in all of 2025. But, when it comes to hype and height, Nazaré still reigns supreme. Many big wave fiends are certainly licking their lips for their chance to bag the elusive 100-footer and etch their names into the history books and new endorsement deals.
As Nic says, "Thursday looking very big. Friday is looking very big. Saturday is looking ginormus and Sunday too...this maybe the biggest swell we've had in the last couple years."
The Nazaré Canyon amplifies wave heights incredibly when they hit at the right angle. Given that the Nazaré Challenge swell created 60-foot waves with a swell of 4m at 17 seconds, what will a swell of 9m at 17 seconds do? If the wind and conditions provide clean enough conditions, this weekend could very well mark the arrival of the 100-foot wave.
