Carrick’s classy gesture during Man United U21s’ win over Sporting – something Amorim never did
Manchester United U21s claimed a 3-2 win over Sporting CP in the Premier League International Cup at Progress With Unity Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Interim head coach Michael Carrick was in attendance, in contrast to former manager Ruben Amorim, who did not attend any of Travis Binnion’s matches during his time at the club.
Gabriel Biancheri, who netted a brace in the 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund in December was named in the starting line-up, but it was James Scanlon who stole the show.
The young Reds quickly made an impression on Carrick, taking the lead in the eighth minute, thanks to the brilliance of Jayce Fitzgerald and Scanlon.
Fitzgerald received the ball with his back to goal, showed tremendous footwork to get past his markers before teeing up Scanlon, who side-footed the ball into the bottom corner.
Sporting reacted immediately, levelling the scores through Rafael Mota, who flicked a corner past Will Murdock.
Scanlon restored United’s lead with another fantastic individual effort. Collecting the ball in the visitors’ half, the space opened up for him to drive a powerful shot into the back of the net.
The Gibraltar international completed his hat-trick in the 75th minute, squeezing the ball home at the far post, after Chido Obi’s pass fell to his path.
Seven minutes from time, Martim Peixoto pulled one back for the visitors, collecting a long pass from Miguel Alves to fire past Murdock.
Despite the setback, United held on to claim the victory, rounding off the group stage on a high note.
