Catholic Bishops Praise House for Passing Pro-Life Bills Helping Pregnant Moms
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops praised the House of Representatives for passing two bills aimed at supporting pregnant women and families.
They are describing the measures as steps toward building a culture of life.
In a statement issued Jan. 23, Archbishop Shelton Fabre, Bishop David O’Connell, CM, and Bishop Daniel Thomas—chairmen of relevant USCCB committees—expressed gratitude for the House action on the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act and the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act.
“We were grateful to see the U.S. House of Representatives pass the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act and the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act,” the bishops said.

They emphasized the importance of practical support for mothers, stating: “Building a culture of life requires helping mothers to be able to welcome their new children… No one should have to make this ultimately false choice.”
The Pregnant Students’ Rights Act requires colleges and universities to inform pregnant and parenting students about available resources, services, rights and accommodations. The bishops called it “needed legislation” that would “simply ensure” students are informed of existing support, helping to counter pressures that could lead to abortion.
On the Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act (H.R. 6945), introduced by Rep. Michelle Fischbach, R-Minn., and co-sponsored by Rep. Chris Smith, R-N.J., the bishops highlighted its role in aiding pregnancy help centers. The bill clarifies that states may provide Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) block grant funding to such centers without discriminatory restrictions.
The legislation helps these centers offer “baby supplies, childcare assistance, health and parenting information, career services, and more,” the bishops said. “Amid great uncertainty and difficulty, such support can make a life-saving difference.”
The measures align with pro-life efforts to provide compassionate alternatives and resources for women facing unexpected pregnancies. The Supporting Pregnant and Parenting Women and Families Act addresses past attempts to exclude pregnancy centers from federal funding streams, affirming their role in delivering free medical, material and spiritual services.
The Senate is expected to consider its version of the Pregnant Students’ Rights Act in the coming week.
