TAG Heuer’s New Seafarer Is the Ultimate Luxury Watch for Life on the Water

Fishermen, sailors, surfers, lend me your ears! TAG Heuer Carrera has just dropped a killer new watch with a tide timer complication perfect for any life aquatic—the Carrera Chronograph Seafarer.
The tide timer function was initially conceptualized back in the 1940s by Walter Haynes, then president of Abercrombie & Fitch, who asked Heuer to produce a watch they could market to hunters and fishing enthusiasts using the Solunar theory. The result was the aptly named Solunar. Not long after the initial 1949 launch, Heuer paired the tide timer function with a chronograph and the original Seafarer was born. The watch would remain in the Abercrombie & Fitch catalogue until the mid-1970s, and span numerous variations in case and dial designs.

The new Carrera Chronograph Seafarer uses the brand’s contemporary glassbox design, with a curved dial flange and domed crystal, for easy legibility. The 42mm case stainless steel is water resistant to 100 meters and the metal is both fine brush and polish finished. The opaline champagne dial is accented with gold hands and indexes. The Subdials at 3 and 9 o’clock as well as the hour and minute hands feature "Intrepid Teal," named after the 1967 America’s Cup-winning yacht Intrepid. The tide timer sub-dial is complemented with a dark yellow and a date window appears at the bottom of the small seconds subdial.
The chronograph function is engaged with traditional pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock and the tide indicator is set to using the TIDE button located at the 9 o’clock on the case. The button rotates the tide disc—which is divided into quadrants. After setting the subdial against a local tide table, the disc indicates "high" and "low," making one complete rotation every 29.53125 days.

An exhibition caseback provides a view of the in-house TH20-04 automatic movement that has been adapted to incorporate the tide indicator while still yielding an 80-hour power reserve. The calibre’s vertical clutch and column wheel enable effortless operation of the chronograph complication.
