'You Just Lied To Us': Video Game Fans Rip Into Geoff Keighley After 'Highguard' Release
Highguard was the big final reveal at The Game Awards 2025, a game that has been hyped by The Game Awards host and video game industry journalist Geoff Keighley since its announcement. Now that the game is out, some fans are sharpening their metaphorical daggers and are swinging at Keighley on social media.
In a thread posted by Keighleyon X, the original post of which simply read, "Thoughts on Highguard so far?" Some fans are pulling no punches and are harshly criticizing both the game and Keighley.
"You just lied to us that this game was good in any capacity," wrote SoaR Solace. The reply continues, "I don't owe you an apology, you owe us all as a gaming community an apology for this double down of false promise."
The "owing an apology" response comes from a previous X post that Keighley made in which he posted a GIF that was captioned with "In 48 hours, I'll be accepting your apologies," referencing the release of Highguard and Keighley's predicted positive reception of the then-unreleased title. The response, however, has been anything but positive.
Several fans are questioning Keighley's perceived interest in the game's financial and critical reception, with Smash JT writing, "Do you have a financial interest in this game's success?" Keighley clarified in a follow-up X post with, "lol absolutely not."
Numerous other users on X are harshly criticizing Highguard itself, with several noting that they do not owe any apologies to Keighley for the game's lack of polish and underwhelming quality. "I genuinely feel that this game stole a tiny fragment of my remaining sincere love for gaming from me. This is one of the most offensively bad games I have ever played. This is the Battlefield Earth of AAA gaming. It is time to retire, Geoff," wrote lethe.
Over on SteamDB, reception is also negative, with the game currently sitting at a 32.98 review score after 21,000 user scores. The game currently has a player base of around 19,001, as of this writing (that number does not reflect any console players).
Highguard is available as a free-to-play game on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
