Natalie Portman Speaks Out Against ‘Outrageous’ Immigration Raids In Minnesota
Natalie Portman criticised President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following the fatal shooting of ICU nurse Alex Pretti in Minnesota.
“I’m getting emotional because it’s really been — it’s such a horrible day. It’s been a horrible week,” the Oscar-winning actor said on Saturday before the premiere of her film “The Gallerist” at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, The Hill reported.
“What is happening in our country is just obscene,” she added.
Portman also condemned the Trump administration for the deadly immigration crackdown.
“What Trump and Kristi Noem and ICE are doing to our citizens, and undocumented people, is outrageous and needs to end,” she said.
Portman made the remarks hours after Pretti, 37, was fatally shot by Border Patrol agents Saturday in Minneapolis. On January 7, an ICE agent also shot and killed 37-year-old Renee Good in Minneapolis, sparking protests across the US.
In a separate interview with Variety, Portman wore an “ICE Out” pin to call out the administration, and said the immigration raids have to stop.
“But also, there’s a beautiful community that Americans are showing right now. They’re showing up for each other, protecting each other, and fighting for their freedom,” she said. “It’s a bittersweet moment to celebrate [our film ‘The Gallerist’ that] we’re so proud of on the backdrop of our nation in pain.”
