Cargo Ship Creates Mutant Novelty Boat Wake Wave (Video)
In the niche world of novelty wave surfing, boat wakes are a usual suspect.
Ben Gravy, Dylan Graves, Blair Conklin – the big names in novelty wave surfing have all danced with large cargo ships, scoring their displacement waves.
This one below, however, has definitely not been surfed…not yet.
The video is long, but starting at the 1:01-minute mark, it shows the Wan Hai 360 container ship, which clocks in at 203.5 meters (667 feet) in length and a width of 35.1 meters (115 feet). It flies the Singapore flag. In the video above, the vessel is making its way through the Lòng Tàu River in southeast of Vietnam near Ho Chi Minh City.
As it makes its way through the narrow waterway, the large ship displaces water, and creates freak novelty waves – some of which would be rideable if surfers were around. Maybe a strike mission is in order for the likes of Gravy or Graves.
Per travel information:
“Lòng Tàu River is a picturesque waterway located in Vietnam, known for its serene landscapes and vibrant ecosystems. This river is often explored by boat tours that offer breathtaking views of lush greenery and local wildlife. Visitors can experience the unique culture of the surrounding communities, with opportunities to witness traditional fishing practices and local markets along the riverbanks. The area is particularly enjoyable for those seeking tranquility, making it a popular choice for eco-tourism and relaxation.”
Not mentioned is the frequent cargo ship traffic, which can wreak havoc on the land and boat fishermen in the river. As seen in the video, anglers scramble as the boat careens through the river, creating these large and destructive displacement waves.

But boy, oh boy, that lefthander that the boat wake makes off the seawall…that has some potential. Novelty wave enthusiasts, keep this one on your radar.
