Transfer U-turn: 24yo Man Utd star snubs winter exit to back Carrick project
Manchester United have been handed a timely boost, with one of their key attacking options committing his immediate future to the club.
Speculation has been swirling for weeks over the future of Joshua Zirkzee, who has found opportunities hard to come by this season.
The Sun have revealed that Zirkzee now wants to stay at United for the rest of the season.
Despite heavy interest from multiple clubs in Italy, the Netherlands international has expressed his wish to stay at United beyond Monday’s transfer deadline.
Good news for Man United
Zirkzee has played only 481 minutes in the Premier League across 14 games.
The 24-year-old has scored two important goals and recorded one assist.
With only 15 league fixtures remaining, breaking into the starting XI for even half of those matches looks an uphill task due to fierce competition in United’s attacking ranks.
That gamble could come at a personal cost, with his World Cup hopes potentially at risk if regular minutes continue to elude him.
From United’s perspective, caretaker head coach Michael Carrick will be delighted to have another option at his disposal.
Carrick is determined to help United secure the UEFA Champions League for next term.
To achieve that ambition, he will need meaningful contributions from every available squad member.
Zirkzee is likely to still find a new club next summer, where he could get a guaranteed starting role.
The Red Devils would also want to sign an elite striker, who can truly compete with Benjamin Sesko for the number nine spot.
