This isn’t exactly the hottest of takes anymore, but I never liked the term ‘clean girl’.
It’s been an absolutely huge trend for the early 2020s – once you’ve read the words ‘clean girl’, chances are you’re picturing a slicked-back hairdo, short nude manicure, perfectly glowing skin with (allegedly) barely a sniff of makeup on it, and a perpetual uniform of yoga gear.
But almost since it began, there’s been plenty of discourse about the trend, particularly how problematic it is to equate an aesthetic – nay, a lifestyle – with what is ‘clean’, since it implies that anything else, from frizzy hair to long acrylic nails to a smoky eye, is therefore not.
(I also don’t really care for the fact that the whole aesthetic revolved around pairing back, well, pretty much everything from your makeup to your jewellery to the colours in your home.)
While there’s nothing wrong with a slicked-back bun or some tinted moisturiser; if you, like me, are interested in having a bit more fun with your look this spring, these are the beauty products you should be investing in.
