Pakistan Army Kills 92 Militants After Baloch Separatist Attacks Leave 33 Dead
Pakistan’s military announced Saturday it killed 92 militants in extensive operations across Balochistan province following coordinated attacks by Baloch separatists that killed at least 15 security personnel and 18 civilians.
The Balochistan Liberation Army claimed responsibility for simultaneous attacks in 10 cities including Quetta, Mastung, Nushki, Gwadar, and Panjgur, targeting police posts, paramilitary installations, and a high-security prison.
Balochistan, Pakistan’s largest but least developed province, has faced a decades-long separatist insurgency driven by grievances over resource exploitation and political marginalization. The resource-rich region contains significant natural gas reserves and hosts the strategically important Gwadar Port, part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor, making it a flashpoint for militant activity as separatists oppose what they view as exploitation by the central government.
Pakistan’s military blamed India for supporting the attacks, stating militants harmed women, children, and civilians, while announcing operations to bring perpetrators to justice across the province.
The Balochistan Liberation Army, designated as a terrorist organization by Pakistan and the United States, has intensified attacks since launching its multi-phase “Operation Herof” campaign in August 2024. The group claims to fight for Baloch independence from Pakistan, alleging resource exploitation and human rights abuses, while Islamabad accuses the militants of receiving foreign support and using Afghan territory for cross-border attacks, allegations both India and the Taliban deny.
Authorities reported militants attacked a workers’ camp in Gwadar, killing five men, three women, and three children, while freeing over 30 prisoners during a prison raid.
Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkey, UAE, and Britain condemned the attacks and expressed solidarity with Pakistan, while the Taliban have remained silent on the violence.
Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif called the attacks “terrorism” backed by foreign support, stating militants target development projects including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor to undermine peace and economic opportunities.
