Super Bowl Weather Snapshot: How Conditions Stack Up Across Key Cities
Super Bowl Sunday is imminent, with the Bay Area's Levi's Stadium playing host once more for Super Bowl LX — the NFL’s first outdoor championship in five years.
Just like in any major sports tournament, the NFL is making a big play in the hopes that the California weather will provide the ideal conditions for a game that will, hopefully, go smoothly, even in the midst of freezing winter temperatures across the United States.
The West Coast isn't exempt from extreme environmental conditions during this period, either — with a string of earthquakes, beginning at 3.8 magnitude on Monday, striking San Ramon, a stone's throw from Levi's stadium.
Currently, The Weather Channel predicts mild, mostly cloudy conditions for Super Bowl Sunday in Santa Clara, which falls on February 8, with highs of 67 degrees Fahrenheit (°F) during the day and lows of 46°F. In typical winter fashion, the sun will set at around 5:34 pm, with "light and variable" winds all day.
Seattle Seahawks fans face a rainy day in their home city on Super Bowl Sunday, with 70-80% coverage across the city. Periods of rain will, however, remain "light", according to The Weather Channel's long-range predictions. Humidity will be high across the day and night, ranging from 86-91%, with sunset at 5:22 pm. Seahawks fans watching from home will also have a slight temperature disadvantage, with a high of 51°F.
As for the New England Patriots, their followers will face a mixed bag of sunny weather with low temperatures in Boston, peaking at 14°F during the day and 3°F conditions at night when the big game will be on. Fans of the finalists also face stiff winds of up to 20mph.
Viewers in New York City will see temperatures of up to 22°F — a significant climb from the cold snap that has so far claimed the lives of 16 New Yorkers — but the second-lowest of the week. The majority of the lead-up to Super Bowl Sunday will see temperatures in the upper 30s during the day.
Chicago is set to sit comfortably in the 20s during the championship, with highs of 29°F and the minimum of 21°F at night. Clouds will be mild and intertwined with sunny periods throughout the day, a significant improvement as the city shifts away from single-digit temperatures.
