UN Security Council to Hold Meeting on ISIS-K Threats to Global Security
The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold a meeting Wednesday to review terrorism threats, including activities of ISIS and its Khorasan branch across the region.
According to the council, discussions will center on the UN Secretary-General’s twenty-second strategic report assessing threats posed by ISIS to international peace and global security.
The report notes that ISIS-Khorasan remains active in northern Afghanistan, particularly in areas near the Pakistan border, maintaining operational capacity capable of launching regional attacks.
The statement also referenced a January 19 attack in Kabul attributed to ISIS-K that killed six Afghan civilians and one Chinese citizen.
Security Council members earlier condemned the Kabul attack in a January 21 statement drafted by China, stressing the need for continued global cooperation against terrorism threats.
Meanwhile, UN monitoring teams and international security experts continue to warn that ISIS-K remains capable of organizing high-impact attacks across Afghanistan and neighboring regions.
The Taliban have repeatedly claimed that ISIS has been suppressed in the country and cannot use Afghanistan territory to launch attacks against other countries.
