Warning for Carrick: £51m Tottenham star 'getting better and better' as Man Utd face major threat
Manchester United will face Tottenham Hotspur in a high-stakes Premier League clash tomorrow.
Caretaker head coach Michael Carrick will be eager to extend his winning run, backed by a roaring Old Trafford crowd hungry for another statement performance.
Spurs may have endured an inconsistent campaign, but they still boast match-winners capable of swinging the contest in a single moment.
One of their stars is their attacking midfielder Xavi Simons.
The North London club splashed out £51 million to sign Simons from RB Leipzig last summer.
The 22-year-old is a versatile attacker who can operate across multiple roles, but he looks most devastating when deployed in the number 10 position.
He has featured 18 times in the Premier League this season, contributing one goal and four assists as he continues to grow into English football.
After a settling-in period during his first six months, Simons is now beginning to show exactly why Spurs were so determined to bring him to the club.
Tottenham manager Thomas Frank admitted in a recent press conference that Simons is “getting better and better” with more time.
The Dutch international looked positive with the ball and always tried to play in behind against Manchester City. It was his delightful clipped pass that released Dominic Solanke through on goal for their first goal after the break.
He also caught the eye against Borussia Dortmund, pressing aggressively, carrying the ball with intent and dragging his team up the pitch. The Dutch international even rattled the crossbar with a fierce effort in a draw with Burnley.
Carrick will have to ensure that Simons is not allowed the space and time on the ball as the playmaker possesses the vision and creativity to unlock any defence.
A victory tomorrow would lift United to 44 points, moving them to within just two points of third-placed Aston Villa and ramping up the Champions League push.
