Mt. Shasta Ski Area Closes, but Feet of Snow Is in the Forecast
Mt. Shasta Ski Park, the humble but beloved ski area tucked in the flanks of California's towering Mt. Shasta, is temporarily closed.
The ski area announced the closure on Monday, February 9, 2026, due to "low snow coverage". Brendan, a representative from the ski area, posed in front of a barren slope to show how hard Shasta's snowpack had been by recent rainfall.

"Stay tuned for updates... we will get open," assures Brendan from Mt. Shasta.
Like many ski resorts in the West, Mt. Shasta has been plagued by below-average snowfall and above-average temperatures this winter. A big storm hit between Christmas and New Year's, but powder days have been few and far between.
That appears to be changing this week.
OpenSnow, a popular forecasting app among skiers, is forecasting up to 65 inches of snow could fall at Mt. Shasta Ski Park between today and Thursday, February 19. That would certainly be enough to reopen the ski area.
Mt. Shasta joined neighboring ski areas in Oregon and Washington by closing, at least temporarily, due to the poor snow year. Here's hoping this week's multiple storms deliver and turn the season around.
Stay tuned for a full forecast from our friends at Powderchasers later today.
