Couple Charged After Throwing Baby’s Body Over an Embankment
A couple has been charged with reckless homicide after authorities discovered an unresponsive infant over an embankment outside their home, following the woman’s report of a possible miscarriage at a hospital.
Deann Bennett, 27, and Charles Bennett, 32, both of Booneville, were arrested Monday following a year-long investigation by Kentucky State Police. A grand jury in Owsley County issued indictments in the case in late January.
The investigation began Nov. 29, 2024, when Kentucky State Police Post 7 in Richmond received a 911 call about a woman transported to a local hospital after reporting a possible miscarriage. While at the hospital, the couple informed authorities that the infant remained at their residence on Lewis Lane in Booneville.

Troopers and detectives responded to the home, where they located an unresponsive infant over an embankment outside the residence. Owsley County Coroner Rob Morgan pronounced the infant dead at the scene. The body was transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.
Deann Bennett faces charges of reckless homicide, tampering with physical evidence, abuse of a corpse, and concealing the birth of an infant. Charles Bennett faces charges of reckless homicide and concealing the birth of an infant. Both were lodged in the Three Forks Regional Jail in Beattyville.
State police have not released details on the infant’s age, the cause of death, or other specifics from the autopsy.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about the treatment of unborn and newborn life, with authorities pursuing felony charges in what began as a reported miscarriage but ended in the discovery of an infant’s body discarded near the home.
No additional statements from law enforcement were detailed in available reports. They are scheduled to be arraigned on March 2.
