Bride Considers Suing Friend of 10 Years Who Skipped Her Wedding & People Think It Would Be Justified
A hurt bride is considering taking her friend to court after she skipped her destination wedding.
Taking to Reddit’s popular “Am I the A—–” forum the 25-year-old newlywed explained that she and her husband exchanged vows in Bali last month.
Her friend, who she referred to as Gemma, brought her husband along for the trip. However, when it was time for the Redditor’s wedding, the couple was nowhere to be found.
Now, she thinks that there’s a case that could be ironed out in small claims court.

In her post, the bride explained that she and her husband decided to foot the bill for their friends to fly out to Bali and to stay in the hotel. She estimated that the tickets cost $2,000 a piece, and the hotel averaged between $150 and $300 for the full week.
She paid for Gemma’s ticket and hotel, racking up a bill of about $2,300. However, Gemma paid for her husband’s ticket.
What happened after they got to Bali?
“Gemma took the free plane ticket to Bali and the hotel room and when I asked her why she didn’t show up she said that since they couldn’t afford their own honeymoon that this was a perfect opportunity,” the bride wrote, adding that Gemma’s husband “didn’t feel like going” to the reception.
The bride added, “I was really hurt by this since Gemma and I have been friends for over 10 years.”
While she was tempted to sue her friend to return the money that was spent on her ticket, the bride added that Gemma had just had a new baby and her husband had lost his job. She was concerned that doing so “would cause them more financial problems” and wondered if this made her the bad guy.
However, many Redditors were in agreement that she wasn’t in the wrong for considering legal action.
One user was shocked to find themselves agreeing with the bride, saying, “Someone offers to give you a free vacation on the condition that you attend one party during that time? I’d be jumping for that opportunity. To take that free vacation and then no-call-no-show to your friends’ wedding is really s—– behaviour on their part. They could have extended their stay if they wanted to treat the trip as their own honeymoon.”
Another agreed, writing, “You didn’t offer them a gift of a honeymoon. You offered to help them attend your wedding so they didn’t have an undue financial burden.”
They continued, adding, “Also? They could totally have done both, spent some time together in honeymoon mode, and also attended your wedding. That they took your money and used it solely for themselves is not okay.”
While many called for her to cut off communication with Gemma, someone opined that she needed to at least try to get paid back first, saying, “It is such an abuse of the friendship to take $2K and then not even bother to show up for the wedding.”
“You are not an a——. Your friend is the a—— here,” one person wrote, expressing what many agreed with.
While some questioned if the case would hold up in court since the ticket could be viewed as a gift, others argued that the bride and her friend had entered into a verbal contract by agreeing to attend the wedding if the bride paid for travel and lodging.
“Contracts do not have to be formal to be enforced,” a Redditor argued. “A gift is something given without expectations, so this wasn’t a gift.”
They wrote, “She bought the ticket with the stipulation her friend was coming to the wedding. Her friend didn’t fulfill her end of the contract. Now is she guaranteed to win? No. But she definitely would have a case.”
