Man United Women rally from behind to beat London City and maintain WSL winning streak
Manchester United Women came from behind to beat London City Lionesses 2-1 in the Women’s Super League at Leigh Sports Village on Sunday afternoon.
Off the back of their impressive 3-0 victory at Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, United started on the back foot and fell behind inside six minutes.
Freya Godfrey whipped a cross into the area for former United forward Nikita Parris to head home.
Shortly after, London City came close to doubling their lead as Freya Godfrey’s shot deflected off Millie Turner, but Phallon Tullis-Joyce kept it out.
Jess Park drew United level on the half-hour mark, curling a strike past goalkeeper Elene Lete into the bottom corner to register her seventh league goal this term.
Parris nearly restored London City’s lead before halftime when she ran onto a loose ball, only to fire a weak shot straight at Tullis-Joyce.
Chances were few and far between in the second half until United took the lead in the 79th minute as Turner headed Maya Le Tissier’s free-kick into the net.
Turner’s goal proved to be the difference between the two sides, helping United extend their winning streak to four matches in the competition.
Man United are back in action on Thursday evening, hosting Atleti in the Women’s Super League knockout play-off second leg.
Marc Skinner’s side next league game is on 18th March away at West Ham United.
