Is Presidents Day a Federal Holiday? Here's What's Open, Closed From Banks to UPS

When Washington was alive, the United States celebrated the day of his birth, Feb. 22, but it didn't become an official federal holiday until Jan. 31, 1879. The celebration of Washington - and eventually other presidents - was officially moved to a new date on June 28, 1968 when Congress passed the “Uniform Monday Holiday Act”.
The bill signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson moved three holidays to Mondays: Washington's Birthday on the third Monday in February, Memorial Day on the last Monday in May, Veterans Day on the fourth Monday in October.
"This will mean a great deal to our families and our children. It will enable families who live some distance apart to spend more time together," Johnson said in a statement at the time. "Americans will be able to travel farther and see more of this beautiful land of ours. They will be able to participate in a wider range of recreational and cultural activities."
