Woman Who Thinks She Gave Friend a 'Discount' Is Shocked to Be Called 'Tacky' After Charging Him for Bottle of Wine

A woman was confused after being called “tacky” by a friend over a bottle of wine.

Taking to Reddit‘s popular “Am I the A—–” forum, the 26-year-old woman explained that she had a friend stay at her house over the weekend when she was gone.

After getting home, she tried to charge her housesitting friend for a bottle of wine that they drank. The Redditor thought that she was giving him a fair price, but he firmly disagreed.

In her post, the woman explained that she told her friend to “help himself to whatever” he wanted from the kitchen while he was in the house.

She thought that would apply to “snacks and stuff.” However, he accidentally drank a “$120 bottle of vintage barolo,” which the woman “was saving for [her] promotion.”

“He literally drank the whole thing alone while watching netflix,” she wrote, adding that he “got all weird” when asked about drinking the bottle since he had “permission” to anything in the kitchen.

She wondered, “Like okay but who drinks a hundred dollar bottle of wine without asking first???”

After the conversation, she sent a Venmo request for $80, saying that she “gave him a discount.” Her friend did not agree, calling her “tacky” and telling the group chat that she was “a bad host.”

“I feel like there’s literally an unwritten rule of guest logic where u dont touch the most expensive thing in the house,” she argued, explaining, “If i tell u to help yourself to my garage it doesnt mean u can just drive off in my car??”

Feeling like her pal “took advantage,” she was hoping fellow Redditors would agree. However, she was hugely wrong.

“Expensive and cheap bottles of wine look the same to people who don’t know wine. Be more precise in your instructions for the person doing you a favor. He assumed that you only have cheap bottles of wine because you cavalierly said to help himself. This is tacky,” one person wrote.

Another agreed, writing, “Buddy probably thought he was doing a solid by chilling with the cat all evening instead of just feeding and watering and leaving. and then this. lol. who are these people who expect everyone to know what wine is worth?!?”

Others agreed that they wouldn’t have any idea about the price of a bottle of wine based on the label alone.

Additionally, she did tell him to “help himself.”

“You should just chalk this up to miscommunication,” someone opined. “You said help yourself to anything in the kitchen. If you had told him prior, ‘except for that bottle of wine I’m saving for my promotion,’ you could ask for full compensation. This is on you. Swallow your ego and let this go, my dude. It’ll be better for the friendship.”

Another user agreed that the friendship “should be salvageable.” All the woman had to do was delete the Venmo request and apologize for blaming her friend for being unclear.

One final person called her out over the wine’s price, saying, “And also, $120 is not that much, especially if you’re the kind of person who buys $120 bottles of wine. Asking to be repaid is super tacky, even if his friend made a legit mistake.”
