Big News: The Best Budget Hardtail MTB Just Got Better for 2026
State Bicycle Co’s 4130 Trail bike arrived on the scene with an impressive price tag for what was on offer. The 4130 steel frame has modern geometry with a 65-degree head tube angle, 74.4-degree seat tube angle, internal dropper routing, UDH dropouts, and a threaded bottom bracket. It doesn’t just look like a bike with a much higher price tag; it rides like a premium vessel. But at launch, the 4130 Trail came equipped with a groupset that was left a little bit to be desired in terms of shifting accuracy.

The latest refresh of the 4130 Trail amends this issue with Shimano Deore 12-speed derailleur and shifter, all without affecting the price tag, with complete bikes still coming in at just $1499.99 USD.
- Progressive Trail Geometry: Slack 65° head angle, low-slung top tube, and long front-center.
- NEW: 12-Speed Deore Drivetrain: Shimano Deore M6100, paired with an 11–50T cassette.
- UDH Compatibility: Future-proofed for modern drivetrain tech and easier maintenance.
- Double-Butted 4130 Chromoly Steel Frame: Tough, smooth, and built to take a beating.
- Internal Dropper Routing (31.6mm): Hassle-free dropper upgrades.
- Threaded BB (73mm BSA): Reliable, creak-free, easy service.
- More Mounting Points: Triple bottle cage mounts on the downtube
- RockShox Psylo Silver RC Fork (130mm / 35mm stanchions) — Motion Control damper + Solo Air spring with premium bushings.

At launch, the 4130 came with a 1x11 Speed MicroShift XLE drivetrain and an 11-46t cassette - not terrible, but not the most reliable option out there. Hell, I put a lot of miles on that drivetrain without much issue. But the small-range cassette and variable shifting reliability of the MicroShift derailleur were two things that I and other riders often looked to upgrade after a while. Now, that is one less thing to seek an upgrade for out of the box, and the newest State Bicycle 4130 Trail is now a seriously dialed build, right out of the box.

Built around a double-butted 4130 chromoly steel frame that's tough, smooth, with progressive geometry - a slack 65° head angle, low-slung top tube, long front-center, and short chainstays for playful flicks. Ease-of-use details like a threaded 73mm BSA bottom bracket (no creaking, easy servicing), internal 31.6mm dropper routing, UDH compatibility for future drivetrain upgrades, and triple bottle cage mounts on the downtube round out a frame that's clearly been thought through for real-world riding.
Up front, a RockShox Psylo Silver RC fork brings 130mm of travel through 35mm stanchions, with a Motion Control damper and Solo Air spring delivering smooth rides with easy lockout on technical climbs. The new 12-speed Shimano Deore M6100 drivetrain paired with an 11–50T cassette gives riders a wide climbing range and the kind of reliable, consistent shifting you can count on.
One thing that is still not included in this build is the PNW dropper, an optional upgrade for $199. If you have a spare dropper sitting around, it’s an easy modification to make, thanks to the internal routing.
