Is That Martin Scorsese In The Latest Star Wars Trailer?
The first full-length trailer has been released for The Mandalorian & Grogu, teasing a major cameo by none other than 16-time Oscar nominee, Martin Scorsese.
The trailer features a brief scene in which Pedro Pascal's titular protagonist speaks with a vendor at a food stall in a bustling city whose voice sounds eerily similar to one of Hollywood's greatest living directors.
Disney has not yet confirmed Scorsese's involvement in the film, but there's plenty of evidence (beyond the familiar voice) that suggests that's really him in The Mandalorian & Grogu.
'The Mandalorian & Grogu' Trailer Features Some Martin Scorsese Easter Eggs
Scorsese's character in The Mandalorian & Grogu is a short, multi-armed alien called an Ardennian, a lesser-known species that hails from a planet called Ardennia. The alien has Scorsese's signature bushy eyebrows and fast-talking atittude, clearly paying homage to the legendary director.
While Martin Scorsese may seem like a random choice for a Star Wars cameo, the filmmaker actually has some very tangible connections to the franchise. Not only is Scorsese a close friend and contemporary of George Lucas, who created the series, but he also worked with The Mandalorian director Jon Favreau on The Wolf of Wall Street back in 2013.
Favreau will return to direct this latest feature in the Star Wars universe, so it makes sense that he's brought back on old friend for this minor cameo.
Though he's best known as a director, Scorsese has done plenty of work in front of the camera throughout his career. Alongside making small cameos in his own films—such as his notorious, uncredited turn in Taxi Driver—he frequently appears in other projects as fictionalized versions of himself.
Most recently, Scorsese stole the show in Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's comedy series The Studio for Apple TV, for which he earned an Emmy nomination. He's no stranger to voice roles either, having appeared as Sykes in DreamWorks' Shark Tale back in 2004.
All that remains is for Disney to confirm Scorsese's involvement in The Mandalorian & Grogu, but there's little doubt that the Oscar-winning filmmaker is behind this hilarious cameo.
