Which Utah Ski Resorts Got the Most Snow From This Latest Storm?
After days of anticipation, doubts, and speculation, it’s here: the storm cycle battering states across the West is, indeed, delivering memorable ski conditions to Utah.
So memorable, in fact, that it’s prompted some mountains to tweak operations amid the powder heaps.
Several resorts, including Alta Ski Area and Snowbird, wound down operations early on Wednesday because of the snow, which fell in feet, not inches. Brighton, too, threw in the towel at 5 p.m. that day.
For context, since the storm started, Alta’s seen 48 inches of snow. In the past 24 hours, 22 inches of snow fell. “Thanks for your patience while we faced everything Mother Nature threw our way. If you need us, we’ll be digging out,” the ski resort said in a social media update.
Snowbird’s snow reporter put it all in frank terms Thursday morning, writing that over the course of Wednesday, 34 inches fell. “Insane. That feels illegal somehow, I don’t know why, but it does,” he wrote. “What’s even crazier is how much of it and how long we got to ski it, thanks to our patrol (not to mention everyone else who kept us up and running yesterday).”
The wintry weather comes amid a largely dry season that’s seen relatively few powder days. While Utah’s snowpack is getting a boost, there was only a 20% chance it would reach normal by April as of February 3, according to the Division of Water Resources.
The lack of snow drove Nordic Valley, near Ogden, Utah, to suspend operations earlier this month.
But with a more hopeful forecast and some welcome powder on the ground, that ski area has announced plans to reopen on Saturday. At least for now, the tide is turning, and powder is back on the menu.
In short, if you weren’t already planning to do so, now’s probably a good time to take advantage of those sick days. Keep reading for the statewide powder tallies. They're storm totals or seven-day totals, unless otherwise specified.
