Timothée Chalamet Had To Apologize To Kylie Jenner On His Birthday
Even potential Oscar hopefuls can sometimes be grumpy boyfriends.
At a town hall event produced by Variety and CNN, Interstellar co-stars Matthew McConaughey and Timothée Chalamet spoke about their careers and passion for their craft.
When the conversation steered toward the film, McConaughey revealed a birthday surprise that the Marty Supreme star nearly ruined for himself.
Kylie Jenner's Birthday Surprise
During their talk, Chalamet shared how passionate he was about working on the sci-fi epic. The actor said he had "legitimately maybe seen [the film] like 22 times," including "12 times" in theaters. Chalamet played McConaughey's teenage son.
The unexpected reveal then came from McConaughey, who said, "His girlfriend set him up with a screening of Interstellar for his birthday."
"This is true, man," Chalamet replied. "For my last birthday."
"I was grumpy on the way there because I didn’t know where she was taking me. 'That’s my birthday — why are we driving 30 minutes outside of L.A.?'" he recalled. "I got to the theater, and it was Interstellar in IMAX."
Chalamet admitted he quickly changed his tune. "I said, 'Oh, I’m sorry. I’m sorry I was so grumpy on the drive.'"
"I wasn't even going to bring that up, man," Chalamet said, laughing, while McConaughey giggled beside him.
Jenner and the Oscar hopeful have been together since 2023.
Chalamet turned 30 last year on December 27th.
Chalamet and McConaughey's 'Interstellar' Experience
"I think you could see I was aimless but motivated," Chalamet said to McConaughey about working together on the film.
The actor was 17 and fresh out of high school when he landed the role in the critically acclaimed Christopher Nolan directed epic. It marked his second ever film role.
Chalamet previously admitted to Emma Stone during Variety's Actors on Actors interview that he once felt like a "fraud" while attending the film's screening. It was early in his career, and he recalled how he had "wept for an hour" after, expecting his role to be bigger. (Chalamet appears in the first 37 minutes, playing the younger version of Casey Affleck’s character.)
Looking back on that time as a young actor, Chalamet thanked McConaughey for showing him kindness on set.
"It was super inspiring," the Marty Supreme star said. "I just can’t thank you enough for being warm to me at that time, when you had no reason to be warm to me. It changed my life."
"You were pretty easy to be warm to," replied McConaughey.
